A program by women, for women

Livin’ It! Prison Project has delivered programs in three facility in Virginia since 2001. These programs are designed to reduce the risk of harm to incarcerated women by providing education and tools in a safe environment where self-evaluation, reflection, and growth may empower women to achieve healthy outcomes for themselves and their children.

Incarceration Facts

The United States of America has more than 3 times the number of prisoners versus the combined total number of prisoners in all developed countries throughout the world

Women are incarcerated at a rate of 50% more than men since 1980. The number of incarcerated women DOUBLED in the 1990s

75% of incarcerated women are the primary caretaker of at least one child prior to incarceration. Children of incarcerated women are at increased risk for mental health challenges and delinquent behavior

LIVIN' IT! HAS SERVED OVER 2,000 INCARCERATED WOMEN IN VIRGINIA SINCE 2000

Livin' It! conducts a 9 week of educational course at Virginia Correctional Facilities
    • Each "Livin' It" course is presented in 9 separate sessions and concludes with graduation over a 9 week period time frame. 
    • Develops physical, mental and spiritual skills for healthy living and return to society
    • Delivers HIV Education to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS
    • Empowers incarcerated women for self-care with skill-building activities
    • Educates on substance use disorders and coping strategies
* Funds are needed for: volunteer education, travel expenses for volunteer travel to remote sites, educational materials for each course, and other operational costs
